In order to speak about the Contucci family, it is necessary to go back in time since this estate boasts over 1,000 years of history including the fact that this noble family already produced wine in the far-off Renaissance period. Nowadays the Contucci family, one of the oldest in Montepulciano, resides in a beautiful building, work of the architect Antonio da Sangallo, in the very central Cathedral Square. They are still today the only ones to make wine within the city walls just like at one time in the distant past because of raids by enemies. Alemanno Contucci is the head of the winery, assisted by his children, Ginevra and Damiano, and his grandson, Andrea. Approximately 100,000 bottles are produced and are destined for foreign markets while a good part of them remains in the winery given that every day more than 150 people visit the old cellars which date back to 1200. The oldest bottle dates back to 1887.

The vineyards are located in the best areas for Nobile. The vines used are naturally indigenous to the area with centuries of history. The vineyards vary in age from two to forty years old. The slow ageing process takes place in small-medium barrels of seven to 25hl under constant temperatures and humidity levels year round in the old cellars. I recommend visiting this charming cellar in the heart of Montepulciano.

Very traditional wines such as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2004. A floral nose of Parma violet and cherry with scents of tobacco and spice. In the mouth it is warm with tannins not yet completely harmonized, but the character of this wine is immediately felt. In a few years it will give the best of itself. Persistence of a good satisfaction.

The Rosso di Montepulciano 2005 is also a wine of the territory. Very traditional, it follows the precise imprint of the winery. It remains a bit fresher than the Nobile. Great scents of red fruits and spices. In the mouth it is immediate with very evident tannins and great sapidity. A medium-persistent finish but interesting in the diverse vegetal undertones.
