Capitoni (English)

The Capitoni estate was bought by father, Francesco, at the end of the 1960s and includes 50 hectares of woods, olive groves, land and vineyards. In 1994, Marco, one of his sons, took over the wine production and, after a lot of sacrifice and investments, the first bottle of Orcia wine came out on the market with the 2001 vintage. There are five hectares of vines, which are about eight years old, with one hectare dating back to 1977. The land is clayey and tufaceous with the presence of shell fossils. Yield per hectare is about  50 quintals and the fermentation is in temperature-controlled steel vats. The wine then rests for about 12 months in French barriques.

Approximately 15,000 bottles are produced, 75% of which is destined for the international market. Marco strongly believes in his wine and in the Orcia denomination, and the first recognition from the sector confirms the quality of his product. A second wine, a reserve made from grapes of the oldest vines, will be released in Spring 2008.

Rosso d'Orcia Capitoni 2005 is an 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot blend. Bright ruby red in colour. On the nose it opens slowly given that the alcohol is still very present. In the mouth it is immediately convincing  with a decisive sapidity and excellent length. It is a wine that unites strength and elegance. Open a few hours before serving.

A caryatid is the symbol of the winery. This statue can be found over the entrance to the very old Pieve di Corsignano, a lovely church built in the VIII century located near Pienza
