Santa Giulia (English)

The Santa Giulia winery has belonged to the Terzuoli family for over 40 years since it was bought by Nonno Gino in 1959.It spreads over 18 hectares at 300 metres above ses level. Today, his grandson, Gianluca, runs the winemaking part of the estate. The first Brunello came out with only 3.000 bottles in the 1999 vintage. There are only six hectares in production for Brunello. The oldest vines date back to 1974 while the youngest, which are from 2000, were planted following a careful clonal selection in order to obtain the best product from the combination sandy and clayey soil. The entire production totals around 8.000 bottles.

Meticulous work in the vineyards as well as low yields per hectare form the foundation of the top quality of these products. This family-run business has big plans for the future including the construction of a new cellar for traditional vinification that features the latest wine technology. In a few years, we will be able to taste the Vin Santo that Gianluca has promised to produce for his mother, Mirella, by planting four rows of Malvasia near the house.

The first selected wine for this years is the Rosso di Montalcino 2004, fruit of a years that enjoyed a perfect climate. Ruby red with crimson highlights. On the nose it slowly opens showing a marvellous range of mature fruit and floral hints. In the mouth it is warm and dry with well-extracted tannins, typical of this estate. A great red wine and a top pick in the category of quality-price.

Not to be missed is the Riserva di Brunello 2001 being that it was the first reserve wine made by this estate. Deep ruby red in colour. Mature fruit with hints of spices of cinnamon and liquorice. The flavour is decidedly caressing. A wine of great character that still needs more time in the bottle to express all of its elegance. Persistent finish rich in undertones. Keep un the good work, Gianluca!
