Palazzo Vecchio (English)

Advertising agent Marco Sbernadori with his wife, Alessandra, divide their time between Milan and this wonderful winery in an old convent of the 1300s located in the area of Valliano,a few kilometres from the centre of Montepulciano. Marco has told me about his wonderful childhood memories when his father had a small production of Bonarda near Pavia. However with a background much different than that of wine, both he and his wife have had to learn about winemaking step by step in the same way that the quality of their hard work worthwhile.             

In recent years their two children have joined them in managing the winery with Luca in sales and Maria Luisa in public relations. The winery started in 1988 with the first label of Vino Nobile for the 1990 vintage. Today there are 30 hectares of Nobile with a production yielding 60.000 bottles. The vines vary in age from the 70-year-old " vines in the woods", which are carefully cared for in order to maintain a good base, to the ones planted in 2006 chosen after carefully studies of the territory. The ageing process is followed closely with careful selction of both big and small French oak barrels which allow for perfect oxygenation of the wine.

Excellent products from the Riserva to the Vin Santo. The same for the Rosso di Montepulciano 2004 which is just as good as a great Nobile wine.Wonderful bright ruby colour. On the nose, an explosion of floral tones and mature hints of red fruit. In the mouth it is enveloping with a balance among all of its exemplary components. Soft tannins and appropriate dose of wood. The finish is long with hints of spices and tobacco.

 The  Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2003 is a blend of Prugnolo Gentile, Cannaiolo Nero and Mammolo. Scents of spice on a drop of balsamic hints. On the palate its robustness is immediately evident with well-extracted tannins and unique flavour. The finish is very long with continual encore of fruit. A great wine of absolute pleasure.
