La Canonica (English)

At the end of the 1950s, the Vannetti family arrived in San Giovanni d'Asso at the estate which spreads over 40 hectares of mainly agricultural land. Around the 1980s they started to stir an interest among the occasional tourists in these charming places. The development of the agriturismo consequently  began with the  restructuring  of a beautiful old farmhouse and a very-needed new  cellar in order to better the wine production. The first label was released in 1990, but it was the beginning of the new denomination, Orcia, wich marked a decisive turning point in the plans of the winery for Orfeo's daughters, Serenella and Donella.

The production has remained limited being that it is purely a family-run business. Today three hectares are cultivated for an annual production of 6.000 bottles. The very hilly land does not leave much space to plant new vines. As such, the existing ones are cared for with the utmost attention to grow the best grapes.

Getting to the wine tasting, we have the 2004 Orcia Rosso Assoluto of an intense purple colour. On the nose, it remains very vinous with hints of morello cherry, plum , spices and roasted scents. The structure is of great impact with tannins in the phase of maturation. Good sapidity. Good lenght in the finish.

The 2005 Orcia Rosso Terre dell'Asso, Sangiovese with a small percentage of Malvasia Nera. Purple colour of great consistency. On the nose, scents of undergrowth and spicy memories of black pepper and nutmeg. The taste is animated with a solid alcoholic structure and very present tannins. Pleasantly acidic and upfront finish
