Pian dell'Orino (English)

Born and raised in Alto Adige, Caroline Pobitzer came to Montalcino in 1996 where she, enchanted by the beauty of the area, decided to settle. She bought an old farm house on the south east side between Montalcino and Castelnuovo dell'Abate and, with her brief experience in enology from her father who has a small vineyard in Merano, she decided to throw herself into this adventure. Her husband, enologist Jan Erbach, who had already worked in Montalcino for a few years, would help her. Together they worked hard to produce genuine wines of quality with characteristics linked to the territory.

Their philosophy is of a natural production following the criterion of organic farming and biodynamic methods. Their vineyards are located in four different zones of Montalcino thus the grapes are chosen for the different types of wine produced. Low yields, spontaneous maceration and fermentation without added yeasts in stainless steel vats and oak barrels. There are about five hectares of land planted with vines producing about 20.000 bottles, 80% of which are exported.

The 2005 Rosso di Montalcino, whose grapes originate from the Pian Bossolino and Cancello Rosso vineyards, clearly reflects the philosophy of the winery. Ruby red in colour. On the nose it is very generous, proposing a range of red fruits and vegetal nuances. In the mouth it is warm and dry with very elegant tannins. Very long in the finish.

With a production of only 6.000 bottles, the 2002 Brunello di Montalcino is an excellent product considering the difficult vintage. The fragrances, which do not reveal themselves immediately, recall floral scents and herbaceous undertones. The unexpected strength is surprising. The soft tannins and alcohol balance themselves in an exemplary way. This is definitely a winery worth keeping close track of.
