Fanti (English)

The Tenuta di S.Filippo winery is located near the stupendous Romanesque basilica of Sant'Antimo on the road that leads to the Amiata from Montalcino. Filippo Fanti and his wife, Gabriella, successfully manage the winery with their two daughters. There are 300 hectares of land divided into 50h for the vines and 100h for an olive grove with a renowned production of oil from the family-run oil mill. The climate in this area is particularly suitable for producing full-bodied wines due to the great amount of sunshine during the day and sharp temperature changes at night with cool winds from the Amiata.

Meticulous work on the vines and a rigid selection during the harvest yield top quality grapes for the recently inaugurated new cellar. Robust wines with great character and concentration characterize the wines of this estate. With an output of about 230.000 bottles, including 70.000 Brunello and 80.000 Rosso, 70% of production is exported to foreign markets. Starting this year, the winery will release a Sangiovese Rosé.

The 2005 Rosso di Montalcino presents an intense ruby red colour. On the nose it is vinous with roasted scents and wildberry preserves. In the mouth it is warm and vigorous, richly extracted still-evolving tannins. It ages both in barriques and medium-sized oak barrels. Long in the finish where ripe fruits come back with various undertones.

Only 17.000 bottles of 2002 Brunello di Montalcino were produced after passing through the vineyard no less than seven times. The result is remarkable even though this wine should not be aged for a long period of time given the difficult vintage. Scents of tobacco and liquorice but also vegetal hints are noticeable behind an ever -present oak. Upon tasting, it immediately shows a good structure with excellent tannins a decisive acidity. Good length.
