It was 1963 when Alibrando Dei bought his first vineyard called Bossona, which later lent its name to the main wine of the winery. During the 1970s he acquired Martiena with 20 hectares of land and a splendid manor house, which is currently the heart of the wine production of the estate together with parts of the new cellar. The embodiment of the Dei estate is granddaughter Caterina who left an artistic path of acting and music in 1991 to fully dedicate herself to all areas of the winery with the encouragement of other family members. This combination of art and wine fascinates Caterina who often treats friends to a few pieces on the piano during wine tasting. The property stretches over 100 hectares, 38 of which are currently in production, at an average altitude of 300 metres above sea level.

The grape types are typical in the local area: Prugnolo Gentile ( Sangiovese), Canaiolo Nero and Mammolo. Spring pruning and selective thinning of fruit clusters limit production to yield about 60 quintals per hectare. The vineyards are divided into four productive units: Bossona, Martiena, la Ciarliana and la Piaggia. The annual production is of about 60.000 bottles of Nobile, 20.000 of Reserve ( produced only in the best vintages) and 40.000 Rosso. Dei exports 60% of its production abroad.

My first pick is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2004. A very shiny ruby red. A bouquet that ranges from cherry to ripe plum to spices such as cloves and liquorice. Rich and generous on the palate with still slightly edgy but very complex tannins. A very long finish.

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Bossona 2000 is a very interesting. A very beautiful intense ruby red colour. On the nose it is immediately generous with scents of ripe fruit, tobacco and hints of spice. On the palate a great structure is brought out with a perfect balance between all of its components, outstanding extraction of tannins. The finish with its notes of dried flowers is never-ending. A wine that absolutely cannot be overlooked.
